Mobile Racking for Cold Storage: Making Every Cubic Metre of Chilled Space Pay Its Way

Cold storage and chilled distribution facilities across Northern Ireland are under constant pressure to hold more stock without expanding the building. Extending a cold store is costly, both in construction and in the ongoing energy bill for cooling the extra space. For many operators, the better route is making more of the space already available, and that is where mobile racking earns its keep.

Mobile racking works by mounting conventional pallet racking runs on motorised or manually operated carriages that travel along floor-mounted rails. Instead of leaving a fixed aisle in front of every run, as you would with static racking, you only need one working aisle for the whole installation. The bays either side slide apart to open access where it is needed, then close back together once picking or put-away is finished. In a chilled or frozen environment this can significantly increase usable pallet positions compared with conventional racking in the same footprint, simply because floor space is no longer wasted on aisles that sit empty.

For businesses operating cold storage facilities, that difference extends beyond square footage. Refrigeration often constitutes the largest operational expense in a chilled distribution centre, largely due to the high volume of air that needs to be cooled. A smaller footprint holding the same stock, or the same footprint holding more stock, means a lower cooling load per pallet position. Over the lifespan of an installation, this leads to a considerable reduction in operational costs, not including the savings from deferring or avoiding a building extension altogether.

Mobile racking is not just for cold stores, although it is particularly advantageous there. Ambient warehouses that hold slowly turning stock, archive storage facilities, and high-value items that require restricted access all benefit from mobile racking for its space-saving attributes and the option to secure individual aisles. However, if your facility experiences high throughput and requires pallets to be removed from multiple aisles simultaneously, it is often more effective to use static racking, so be clear about your picking frequency before investing in a mobile racking system.

Before specifying an installation, a few practical considerations are important. Floor flatness and loading capacity need proper assessment, since the rails and carriages transmit significant point loads into the slab, and retrofitting often calls for local strengthening work. Power and control systems need a maintenance plan too, particularly in a chilled environment where condensation and low temperatures can affect motors and sensors if they are not rated and protected correctly. Safety interlocks that stop an aisle closing while someone is inside are not optional; they are integral to a safe, compliant system and should be tested as part of any routine inspection.

Routine inspection matters just as much here as with static pallet racking. BS EN 15635 sets out the requirement for periodic expert inspections of racking systems, and a mobile installation brings mechanical and electrical components into that scope alongside the usual checks for beam damage, frame distortion and load notices. Facilities managers should make sure inspectors are briefed on the mobile system specifically, rather than treating it as static racking on wheels.

Specification is where the real value gets decided. Pallet weights, dimensions, turnover rates, temperature range and the number of simultaneous access points all feed into the design of rail spacing, carriage drive systems and safety features. Getting this wrong after installation is far more disruptive and costly to correct than getting it right at the design stage, which is why a proper site survey before any layout is drawn up is worth insisting on.

When warehouse operators consider whether their operations can incorporate mobile racking systems, they typically begin with an uncomplicated analysis: current storage density is measured against potential density with a mobile system, together with the ongoing cost of refrigeration, and the probable expense of building extensions or relocations. In many cold storage facilities across Northern Ireland, that analysis clearly supports making better use of the building already in place.
