Pallet racking is an essential part of most warehouses. Almost all warehouses we come across probably hold a lot of untapped potential, too. Making pallet racking systems work usually requires modern adjustable beams, along with some upright frames and a forklift. Since these systems are so ubiquitous, potential buyers treat racking systems like a commodity. In most cases, that is a mistake, although probably not for the reason you are thinking of.

These systems can be seen in small storage facilities, such as those found in Belfast, all the way to large, full-scale distribution centers. One of the reasons for this vast range is the flexibility of the systems. When the pallet heights of different systems change, the beams are adjusted (or re-pitched ) instead of simply purchasing a new pallet racking system.

There is a wide range of pallet racking configurations and layouts. All of them feature different systems, and all of them are used for different operations. The adjustable pallet racking systems that are most commonly seen, for example, are those that have a wide aisle and free accessibility to all pallets. These systems allow a lot of freedom in picking. In more compact areas, a more selective picking system, such as drive-in racking, which stores pallets more densely, could be used. In many cases, tradeoffs such as pallet accessibility vs storage density must be considered. When recommending a system, we take the way your stock moves into account. This helps us avoid choosing a system that is highly inappropriate, such as one that is very optimal for slow moving products, when the products in your stock are very fast moving.
Safety is Non-Negotiable
Racking systems tend to fall under the category of things that are neglected until a catastrophic failure occurs. Racking systems can be malfunctioned by forklifts, overloaded beams, shortened frame structures, etc. Per the guidelines provided, you are required to maintain regular inspections. A damaged upright pose a legitimate hazard. The consequences of a fully loaded upright falling is not an isolated small incident.
To each system, we affix a load notice to display limits, and we provide the service of an inspected rack. If you’ve inherited a racking system with a purchased building and you do not have any information on the system’s rating or on the installer, that is a valid reason to have a survey done.
Maximising Existing Space
Before any consideration is made on purchasing a new building, every possible optimisation of the existing building footprint should be exhausted. A higher top beam, a more optimised aisle, or a more efficient layout for a portion of the warehouse can all contribute significantly to increased racking capacity to store pallets in a warehouse. We perform that survey free of charge, and we are often able to provide a more optimal layout than people expected.
